Larger Than Life In Corea By The Sea

Just a short drive from us, is Corea By The Sea. A visit to this picturesque village reveals what life in Downeast Maine is all about.

Downeast humor can be subtle or dry, but it always gives a chuckle when you notice. Like these folks that named their home "Lobstertown."

Quite literally, this is the view from their backyard.


It's the type of scene you would expect to see on the cover of a jigsaw puzzle.

When you're here, even on an overcast day, there is plenty of color for you to feast your eyes on.

It's the quintessential Maine fishing village, where as if on queue, the gulls gather above the wharf right while you're taking pictures.

You almost feel like you're on the set of a movie when you're here.

But it's all real, and all larger than life local color.

Sign Language

Designed to get attention, these neon colored signs herald the approach of mud season in Maine. When you hear a Mainer say "They posted the roads today." this is what is meant . . .

Around about the same time, while driving, you may notice a few places where you feel the entire road suddenly get yanked out from underneath your tires. There's an explanation for that too . . .

But one of my favorite signs was barely visible just 15 days ago . . .

My very own sign, that tells me I'm getting hungry for lobster!

Downeast Cotton

If Sunday's walk had me seeing powdered sugar everywhere I looked

todays scenery from the after effects of Monday's Nor'easter had me seeing pure white cotton.

The kind you keep in a pretty glass container in your bath.

Or the kind farmers plant in February in Southern states

In order to harvest it in July

But unlike it's Southern counterpart, Downeast cotton is resistant to boll weevils.
