Slip Sliding Away

Back at Eagle Lake in Acadia National Park today, it was far more challenging for me to get around. These folks have the right idea though.

The lack of snow and milder temperatures have made getting around on foot across the frozen lake very treacherous indeed.

Yes, that's Henri out there on the ground, but he has just finished drilling a hole through the still 2 feet of frozen ice and is just sitting there baiting his trap.

I was able to capture some shots of the arrival of a new ice shack and thought you might like to see how it's done. In this shot, the ice shack is sitting on a utility trailer being backed onto the ice.

How convenient to have a tilting trailer to allow the ice shack to just slide down onto the ice.

These guys picked a good day to do this, don't you think?

And that's all there is to it. Shack is sited. Nice view.

Since the newly sited shack was now blocking the view of our traps from where were were sitting in our truck, we decided to call it quits for the day, and took a walk on a nearby trail. Here's one of the views from the trail.

On our way home, I took this shot out the window as we were passing Somes Sound, which used to be referred to as the only fjord on the East Coast.

In recent years, it's been technically downgraded to a fjard. Whatever. It's still very deep.

All Fired Up

Things were sure heating up at our place tonight. Henri has just taken the lid off our raku kiln to reveal this glowing pot that has reached 1900 degrees F.

Here you can see the tongs he is using to transport this pot over to the waiting garbage can filled with newspaper.

As soon as the pot hits the paper, it bursts into flame.

Tonight we got some aqua color along with the copper flashes.

Even though we used the same glaze, each pot has different results.

Here's the inside of one that got a sprinkling of sea glass at the bottom.

While Henri was busy with the fire tonight, I made myself busy in the kitchen.

Except my blueberry muffins only had to reach 350 degrees F. before they were done.

Missing Snow

This is a shot of Sorrento's oceanside golf course.

It's a shame we don't play golf, because it looks like it won't be long before that will be possible again here. Actually, I think we've already seen a few folks golfing this past weekend.

The ice is already breaking apart in the salt water coves here.

We were supposed to have gotten snow last night, but it never came.

We've been missing a lot of snow this year that the rest of the country has been getting.

Yep, we have been missing snow for a couple weeks now.

What She Said

"She" being the lovely Elenka at Downeast Doing Stuff who wrote a post today about her very first cookbook, which just happened to be the exact same one that was my first cookbook too.

I immediately went to find mine, that I remember my parents had bought me in 1964, the same year we moved to the midwest from Maine. When I opened it up, a little booklet fell out that I had all but forgotten about.

Thankfully, I've learned to spell a little better since then.

I know my Dad must have been the "chef" behind the recipes, as my little booklet contained 7 different ideas and this was so like what we used to have fun cooking up together.

As I began supper tonight, I thought about what I always loved about that Betty Crocker cookbook.

It was because it had lots of photos in color to show you what the food was supposed to look like.

No wonder I like taking pictures of what I cook! And a big thank you to Elenka who helped inspire my trip down memory lane.

Hooked

Today we had another fun day of ice fishing in Acadia. This is a close up of a brook trout. Pretty, aren't they?

It being President's Day, there was a little more activity here.

There were ATVs and snowmobiles for playing on the ice.

We took a little hike on the trail after fishing.

We ran into people snow shoeing and x-country skiing.

There are lots of trails here that you can head out on.

One of Acadia's arched bridges.

I adore these massive works of art.

While I was in my stained glass class this evening, Henri took a trip to buy some more of these.

At Walmart.

That's right, around here Walmart sells worms. Yeah, we're hooked.

A Long Time Ago, In A Far Away Land

My Prince Charming was born.

He traveled nearly all around the world before he made his way into my life.

Happy Valentine's Day

To my Henri. I'm so glad you found me.

Signs of Love

Here's a pretty heart shaped piece of lavender sea glass I found one day right here in Sorrento.

I found this heart shaped rock here too.

Today while I was out walking along the shore, I found this one.

But I left it right there in plain view in honor of St. Valentine's Day.
