Things That Caught My Eye Today

Sometimes while we're out walking, I remember to capture a shot of what may be an unusual sight in other parts of the country.

Part of someone's morning commute.  Because it's not like you can just walk around to clear off the other side.

And then, imagine going to such great lengths only to remember it's a Sunday, or that you forgot your keys.   Yeah, that would not be fun.  As I watched him head back to shore just moments later, those are the thoughts that crossed my mind though.

As I stood on shore watching and snapping pictures, I couldn't help but imagine that not much in the scene I was gazing out on had really changed in the past 100 years or so.  Except for maybe the bench, of course.

The scene is Sorrento's Village Green, looking across Frenchman's Bay toward the mountains of Acadia National Park.  A place that I'm lucky to be able to visit every day.

I even found a lovely piece of sea glass along the shore right there today.   Often, whenever I find a piece of sea glass, it  makes me wonder how it came to be mine.  This particular one, deposited right here at my feet, completely smoothed and hydrated from a 50+ year journey that perhaps began as a bottle of 7up.

And of course, it's always the bright colors that catch my eye.  Especially in winter.

And especially if they're right outside my livingroom window.

Sea Chest

When I  found this wooden box at the thrift store it was in rough shape.  So after applying a quick wash of paint, a little wood putty, and replacing a missing hinge it was ready to hold some treasures.

It used to have an additional line that read "A Place for Everything, and Everything in it's Place" but I erased it with my paintbrush.   I like it better this way.

I admit I have sea glass scattered all over the house wherever I happen to empty my pockets.

Because when we're out walking I usually spot at least one more treasure to bring home.

Ta da! So isn't this the perfect place to stash my sea glass?

All sorted out by color too!

And take a look at this cool print that is underneath the lid.

My $3 sea chest filled with gifts from the sea.

One last shot of my pretty little treasures.

Treasures that the Captain may have never even thought to keep.

Sea Glass Hunting

What's more fun than an Easter egg hunt this time of year? A hunt for sea glass after high winds and astronomically high tides. I'm not an expert, but here are a few things I've learned about sea glass hunting. See those lines of seaweed that run parallel to the shore? That's where the tides deposit most of what washes up on the shore. Look around there.

A good time to go is on a sunny day. (But even better is during that golden hour before sunset where the glint of a piece of sea glass can easily catch your eye.) Also to maximize your area of coverage, plan to go near low tide.

Common pieces are white, green and beer bottle glass. This is the first piece I found today.

Some rarer colors are red, orange, blue, black and aqua. But not necessarily in that order. I was lucky to find this blue piece today.

As well as this nice sized aqua piece.

Here's the first few I found today displayed together.

And here they are displayed with the rest of what I found today.

Look who was in a nearby tree enjoying a snack.

Around here, it helps to have a keen eye.

Because you just never know what you're apt to miss.

A Long Time Ago, In A Far Away Land

My Prince Charming was born.

He traveled nearly all around the world before he made his way into my life.

Happy Valentine's Day

To my Henri. I'm so glad you found me.

And now to let you know who will be receiving a bit of my shore finds from Thursday's post. That would be all of you that left me sweet comments or became a new follower on that day! Please email me with your mailing address so I can send a pocket full of sunshine your way.

A Pocket Full of Sunshine

If you were to borrow any one of my coats or jackets, you would no doubt find a pretty piece of sea glass in the pocket.

Today was a pretty day for a quick pass on the shore, on our way back from our walk. Most of our snow has melted and we have somehow managed to miss the last 2 storms that have taken their toll our our more southern coastal neighbors.

You can actually see two sets of footprints where Henri and I made our way along this small stretch of shore.

In a matter of minutes, this is what I found and tucked into my pocket. It's almost like they were a line of bread crumbs leading me back to the car. Sunny days are perfect for finding sea glass.

Here's what I did with the wire wrapped glass you see in the first picture. I added it to our bedroom chandelier.

Along with a few glass pendants.

It's just a simple thing that I enjoyed doing.

Would you like a pocket full of sunshine to play with too?

Leave me a comment or become a new follower and I will randomly pick someone on St. Valentines Day to receive these 16 pieces of sea glass I randomly found right here in Sorrento, Maine. They include the 8, that I just found today. Also, please make sure you leave your contact information in case your name is selected.

Heartbreaker

Even on a gloomy day, this place where we live never disappoints.

Today I stole a few moments from our walk to beach comb. Right away I found some sea glass. Besides the obvious 2 green pieces, do you notice the other one in this shot?

It's a nice sized chunk that I pulled out of there and it looks like carnival glass to me.

But you're probably wondering what all this has to do with the title of my post.

It's because of this.

It's a new shade of nail polish that is called heartbreaker.

That's Henri, standing way over there in his red jacket, patiently waiting for me.

But once I'm here, I always find it hard to tear myself away from this place.

I chose that nail polish because it reminds me of the color of the ocean, on a not-so-gloomy day.

If it were me though, I think I would have named it l'amour de la mer.

Lost Cargo

I still remember the day this gemstone washed up right next to where I was standing in the water. At first I thought it was a piece of sea glass, but upon further inspection, it appears to be a lost gemstone from the setting of a ring. Someone lost this, yet what are the odds of them finding something they once lost at sea?

It was June 2008, when I found the gemstone, the same day we had beached our lobster boat in order to perform a minor repair. Below is a picture I took that day.

Today, quite literally in the same area as the above picture, we spotted a lobster trap washed up on shore. Possibly due to the over 60 mph wind gusts we had here yesterday -- the same ones responsible for last night's power outage.

For some reason, Henri decided to check to see if it could, quite possibly, be the trap we lost back in October when we were on our last haul of the season.

Each trap has a tag with the licensee's number stamped on it. Turns out, it was one of ours.

It sure is a vast ocean and we're not sure what the odds are of that happening.

But all we know is, today, our lost cargo found it's way back to us.
