Scenes From Sand Beach

Today we spent some time at Sand Beach in Acadia National Park.

A beach less than 1000 feet long, nestled between mountains and rock bound shores.

The sand here is actually made up of fine shell fragments created by the pounding surf.

There have been scenes from a few movies filmed here.

The water temperature in the summer rarely rises above 55 degrees F. When our girls were young, we would all hold hands and then run wildly into the surf screaming at the top of our lungs. Except for Henri. He would just watch us from the beach and shake his head.

So there's not a whole lot of swimming that happens here.

This beach also has sand dunes. The mountain in the background is known as the Beehive Trail. A short, but strenuous hike that will find you pulling yourself up via iron rings embedded in the rock as you peer below at sheer drop offs down a rocky cliff. You never forget climbing this one.

This is the scene from where we approached the beach today from a parking lot trail that leads here.

Such a fun time we had today, and we didn't even get our feet wet either!

Sand Beach is beautiful and has an interesting history. I love the Great Head Trail that looks down on it. NOT the Beehive. That is scary!

BIG smiles here,
as your experience
with the cold surf
is exactly what we
used to have at the
Oregon Coast when I
was little....Although,
being kids, we still
took the plunge ~ brrr!
The Maine beaches have
that same untamed look
that I love about Pac NW
beaches. Just beautiful,
Lili!

I'm with Henri - no cold surf for me. The pictures are fabulous. Did you climb the trail?

Lili,

Oh I love just viewing and going back and scrolling down again to look at these pics. And I know I will come back later this evening and look again. It gives me a feeling inside that I like...
It's beautiful, and seems unaltered. I appreciate that.
And I smiled SO big when I read about the gals running into the surf screaming...I could almost picture and hear it and see Henri shaking his head. I wanted you to know that your writing about that gave me a warm fuzzy about families and moments and I did picture the scene because of your words. It's a good thing. Loved visiting here today. It will be one of the bright spots in my day.
Wow..didn't know you would be doing that by writing your post, did you? :-) :-) Hugs to you and thanks for sharing a memory of your life and a view of the part of our beautiful country where you live.
Awesome!

Oh I know I don't swim in water that causes pain. I tried that once. Once was enough. I love the lakes in Maine. The Cold Atlantic is not jut in stories. The scenery is beautiful. Looks like ya'll had a wonderful visit. Find any pretty shells or beach glass?

I can't help it, I go in the water every time.

Maybe I should grow up...

Oh Lili,
I would love to play on your beaches, join hands with you and race into the water yelling loudly!! I may just make it over to do that one day yet ;-) I did something similar this week when I ran into the cold Atlantic surf at Cap Ferret. Invigorating. All that was missing was a beehive trail!
