Still Life

I took this picture back in January and never posted it because it just didn't seem to fit in with any of my other pictures in my posts.  Until today.

While I was in town today picking up a few groceries I had planned to pick up some more tulips for my kitchen.  However, when I got there and saw the available selection they were a little rough looking.  Then my eye caught the sight of some roses.

A small colorful bouquet for the same price as the tulips.  Can you believe just a little over $5?!

I couldn't resist trying to photograph them in the fading light of our bedroom.  First on our French settee and then in front of our favorite marine painting of a night seascape.  It is particularly dark in there because our bedroom is painted black, a Sherwin-Williams color called sealskin.  We get teased for having a "boudoir" look in there, so you can chuckle if you want to, we're used to it.

I like how they look inside my silver plate teapot.  The lid to the teapot is broken, so it works out really well as a vase.

I normally like to buy roses in all one color, but I think this is my new favorite.  I like the drama of them against the dark background.

Plus the colors go so well with the sunsets we often find around here.  And most importantly I was finally able to show you the drama that a local mussel dragger silhouetted against a January sunset can have too.

These roses are so beautiful, and they look so lovely with the dark background. I love that you painted your bedroom black.....sounds beautiful. And with sealskin, I'm guessing it has a slight shimmer or depth to it.....I'll bet it's gorgeous. And of course, it's probably really easy to fall asleep in a darkened room. Nice!

I love that sunset picture....the colors are amazing!

Our guest bathroom is black with nickel finishes and I just love it. Not quite brave enough to do a bedroom though! Your photography is just beautiful and I love that peachy coloured rose. Have a nice weekend.

Wow- fabulous photos - boat and flowers. I love how the roses almost shine against the backgrounds.

Your black bedroom sounds interesting - a bit hard for me to fathom because I am seriously addicted to all white walls - and a bright white at that - no off-whites for me. I have friends and family that paint their rooms the dark, deep colors and they are fabulous - but give me white.

Sometimes when discussing my color (or non color) choices with others they are surprised when I say all my walls are white - and they will go and look around again. I guess my style of using a lot of color for decorating gives the idea of colored walls, when actually they are nothing but white - wonderful shiny white,I find it so restful.

I like the background that your dark walls give your photos - very dramatic!

I saw your bedroom when you gave me the tour of your house and it's quite lovely, as are your roses.

HI Lili, Something so inexpensive and so beautiful . . . simple joys are the best. A black bedroom sounds so peaceful too and I'm sure it's decorated so pretty with your gift of talent. Blessings, Sandy xox

Loved every pic!!!!!!!! and I think roses are just one of the most beautiful flowers...next to hydrangeas, they are my favorite. I think I would fall in love with your settee...Just a glimpse has me drooling. ;-p Lili, the first photograph is amazing. You and your camera make an award winning team. That photograph belongs on the cover of a magazine about Maine...really. I have one HUGE hydrangea blossom from Cottage on Woodberry sitting on top of a (pewter?) teapot with the lid thrown back. I love it. Makes such a unique combo...so I love your choice... Hugs to you. Thanks for the eye candy! xoxo
